Shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode for product advice: “best organic face oil under ₹1,000”, “reliable Shopify agency for a jewellery brand”. These assistants answer with a short list and cite their sources. Being one of those sources is the new first page of Google. Here is how ecommerce brands earn that place. If you want us to do it for you, see AI search optimisation.
How AI assistants choose what to recommend
- They search first. ChatGPT and Copilot draw on web search indexes including Bing, Google’s AI features use Google’s index, and Perplexity runs its own search. If a page isn’t indexed, it can’t be cited.
- They prefer clear answers. Pages that answer a question directly in the first lines are easier to quote.
- They cross-check. Brands mentioned consistently across reviews, articles, forums and marketplaces are trusted more than brands that only describe themselves.
- They read structured data. Product, offer, review and organisation markup helps them understand prices, availability and who you are.
1. Let AI crawlers and Bing in
- Check that
robots.txtallows AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, and doesn’t block Googlebot or Bingbot. - Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing matters because it feeds several AI assistants.
- Make sure important content is in the HTML, not loaded only by JavaScript after the page opens.
2. Write answer-first content
For every important product, collection and guide, open with a one or two sentence answer to the question a shopper would ask, then the detail. Use the shopper’s own words in headings (“Is this safe for sensitive skin?”), add comparison tables, and include an FAQ. Keep facts specific: sizes, materials, ingredients, delivery times and return terms.
3. Complete your structured data and feeds
| What | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Product schema (name, brand, price, availability, GTIN, images) | Lets AI and search engines read product facts reliably |
| Review and AggregateRating schema | Shows social proof from real customers |
| Organization schema with logo and social profiles | Confirms who you are across the web |
| FAQPage schema on guides and key pages | Gives ready-made answers to quote |
| Google Merchant Center product feed | Feeds Google Shopping and AI shopping results |
| Accurate shipping and return policies in the feed | Shoppers and assistants compare these directly |
Both Shopify and WooCommerce can output this markup; most stores have gaps such as missing GTINs, brand or review markup.
4. Earn mentions beyond your own site
- Collect genuine reviews on Google, marketplaces and review sites.
- Get featured in “best of” lists, niche blogs and local press.
- Answer real questions on Reddit, Quora and communities where your customers ask them, without spamming.
- Keep your brand name, description and contact details consistent everywhere.
5. Keep product data accurate
AI assistants avoid recommending products that look out of stock, mispriced or inconsistent. Sync stock and prices across your store, marketplaces and feeds, ideally through ERP and inventory integration. Update guides when products or prices change and show the updated date.
6. Measure what AI says about you
- List 20 to 30 questions your customers ask before buying.
- Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google every month and record whether you are mentioned or cited.
- Track referral traffic from AI assistants in Google Analytics (look for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot sources).
- Fix the gaps: missing pages, thin answers, weak reviews or missing structured data.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI search optimisation (AEO or GEO)?
It is the work of making your content easy for AI assistants to find, understand, trust and cite, so your brand appears in their answers and recommendations, alongside traditional SEO for Google rankings.
Is AI search replacing SEO?
No. AI assistants rely on search indexes and the same quality signals as SEO. Strong SEO is the foundation; AI search optimisation adds answer-first content, structured data and off-site trust on top.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Organic answers can’t be bought. Some assistants are testing shopping features and ads, but being cited organically depends on your content, data and reputation.
How long does it take to see results?
Technical fixes such as crawler access, sitemaps and structured data help as soon as pages are recrawled. Mentions and reviews build over months. Track your key questions monthly to see progress.
